PORTABLE ELECTROGRAPHIC KIT A simple, convenient outfit for rapid identification of colorless metals as found in platings, polished or corroded metal surfaces, etc.

PORTABLE ELECTROGRAPHIC KIT, A.H.T. Co. Specification. A simple, convenient outfit for rapid identification of metallic elements in metals, alloys or surface platings, for indicating their distribution and location in minerals, tissues, etc., and for identification of chlorides in corrosion products, paper, etc., by means of anodic solution and deposition on a suitable carrier, such as paper. Tests can be made within — or adjacent to — the kit in less than a minute, irrespective of the shape, color or surface condition of the sample, provided satisfactory electrical circuit is established. The kit is supplied with accessories, electrolytes and reagents to permit testing of plated finishes without distinctive color, according to an analytical procedure developed and used in daily control testing by Κ. Ε. Neumann and M. A. Lamme. Metals covered are cadmium, chromium, lead, nickel, silver, tin and zinc; also a test for chlorides which frequently appear in corrosion products. Other metals, alloys, ores, etc., can be anodically dissolved and tested with suitable reagents, for which empty dropping bottles are provided. The electrographic procedure is described by Fritz Feigl in "Qualitative Analysis by Spot Tests," 3rd éd., (New York, 1946), pp. 39 and 461. In use, a small sheet of test paper is moistened with a few drops of the electrolyte and placed on aluminum plate A — or B, if necessary to work at a distance up to · 4 ft. from the kit — which is the cathode. The serrated clip of the red lead wire is connected to the sample, which thus becomes the anode, and contact is made between the sample and the test paper to complete the electrical circuit. Contact of approximately 20 seconds is usually sufficient

to dissolve the minute amount of surface required for satisfactory test. The test paper is then removed and a drop of suitable reagent added. The color which develops indicates the metal which is present. Outfit consists of an electrographic platform with attached polished aluminum cathode A, 3 X 2J/·! inches; a simple electrical meter; to indicate current flow; two 13^2-volt single cell batteries ; two tip jacks; anode with serrated spring jaw and lead, 4 ft. long; polished aluminum cathode B, V/i X 1 ^ inches, with binding post and 4 ft. connecting iead, for making tests outside the case; all contained in portable wood case, 10 X 9 inches X 5 inches high, with hinged cover, carrying handle and rubber feet. Case also contains 20 amber glass bottles, Yi oz. capacity, in separate compartments, i.e., 2 containing electrolytes, 9 containing reagents and 9 empty; a supply of test paper and crocus cloth for polishing.
