Aspirator Traps and Other Bloody Things Putting glass tubes through rubber stoppers has always been a hazard and problem in undergraduate laboratories, either for the students or for those who supply the lab. Our simple change from glass tubing to polyethylene tubing in such items as rubber stoppers for aspirator traps and steam distillation apparatus has had tremendous advantages. The plastic tubing works as well as the glass far these applications, rarely needs replacing, costs less in the long run, does not need fire polishing, and does not give rise to impaled hands.
