NEW Automatic Porosimeter Amazing new microcomputercontrolled mercury intrusion porosimeter lets YOU CONTROL your pore structure analyses. Scan in a few minutes or take more time for detailed, thorough analyses. Operation is completely automatic. All you do is enter sample parameters into the keyboard and wait for the results. The i n s t r u m e n t operation, data acquisition, data reduction and data printout are all automatic. This virtually eliminates the need for data interpretation. The AutoPore 9200 has four low pressure stations for evacuation, filling with mercury and pressurization t o 30 psia, and two high pressure stations for pressurization to 60,000 psia. Both operate independently and concurrently. Micromeritics Instrument Corp. 5680 Goshen Springs Road Norcross, Georgia 30093 • U.S.A. Phone: 404/448-8282 Telex: 70-7450

Automatic Particle Size Analyses Provides precise, fast and flexible particle size distribution for particles from 0.1 to 100 /um diameter. The Microm e r i t i c s SediGraph 5000D automates the classical method of p a r t i c l e size analysis based on Stokes' law of sedimentation which permits a wide analyses range without liquid-liquid or liquidsurface interfaces and without e a s i l y - c l o g g e d , fragile orifices. Data is automatically plotted as cumulative mass percent versus equivalent spherical diameter on an easily read graph. The analyzer o p e r a t e s u n a t t e n d e d and yields results in minutes. The SediGraph can use b o t h aqueous and organic liquids. Results are compatible with other sedimentation data and accuracy and repeatability are better than ± 1 % . The need for "surrogates" (information specialists)—chemists trained to use these data bases and other resources to find and analyze information for others—is discussed, although the author seems to underestimate their value and potential. The author focuses on the use.of the secondary information sources by these surrogates, but today information specialists are really needed for help in giving access to all types of chemical information— for learning both where to look and how to retrieve the needed information. Although information brokers are mentioned as a resource for online searching, reference to them is omitted from the chapter on document access—and they do provide this needed service. It is weU acknowledged that there has been a tremendous growth in both the chemical literature and the technology used to handle it. Inevitably, some of the material in this book is already somewhat dated (the coverage is basically through 1977). Although the author tries to bring us further up to date with notes in the appendix, this doesn't quite compensate for the new developments, especially in information handling and online data bases. The scope of this book is broad, and the author's intended audience is diverse. Although there are some omissions, e.g., Landolt Bornstein series, Thermophysical Properties of Matter (TPRC Data) series, Fieser & Fieser Reagents for Organic Chemistry, etc., as well as bias toward industrial needs, overall the author does a commendable job of covering chemical information tools and techniques in a single book.

Analytical Methods for Glycerol. M. R. F. Ashworth, Ed. Academic Press Inc., 111 Fifth Ave., New York, N.Y. 10003. 1979. $48.50

Reviewed by George G. Esposito, U.S. Army Environmental Hygiene Agency, Aberdeen Proving Ground, Aberdeen, Md. 21010 The stated aim of this book is "to compile in detail a work devoted to the detection, identification, and separation of glycerol in analytical procedures." In this, the author has been successful. The book consists of a review of the available literature through 1976; it contains about 1200 references. In common with most reviews, the text does not treat the subject in depth; instead, sufficient information is given to demonstrate the characteristics of various methods,
