Almost everything known on the subject matter through 1963 has been pulled together in an extremely clear, neat, and readable way, and nowadays, when accessibility of published results is at a greater premium than ever before, these virtues will be appreciated by physicists and chemists alike. Kennicott, Gen eral Electric Co., P. O. Box 8, Sche nectady, Ν. Y. 12301. To the reviewer's knowledge, this is the first book to appear on spark source mass spectrography and related tech niques. A book on this subject is par ticularly welcome at this time. Al though the number of solids mass spec trometry papers in the journals is in creasing, much of the "literature" of the field consists of the proceedings of the annual conferences of mass spectrome try arranged by the E14 committee of ASTM and is not generally available. A readily available source of this infor mation should thus be valuable. The book consists of a short intro ductory chapter by A. J. Ahearn fol lowed by reviews on ion sources by R. E. Honig, photoplate detection by Ε. Β. Owens, special sample techniques by J. W. Guthrie, and microprobe techniques using the spark source by W. M. Hickam and G. G. Sweeney. The field is covered adequately up to the spring of 1964. Most work published since that time appears only if the author is familiar with it through a private com munication. There is a danger that a book of this type will read like a collection of unre lated papers on the same subject. Fortunately, the editor and authors have in general been able to avoid this. A partial exception to this occurs in the last chapter which does not seem to be as well integrated into the book as the other chapters, although the reader may be prepared to overlook this in view of the interesting material pre sented in this chapter. A second danger exists in a young field such as this. There is as yet not sufficient technical evidence to decide many questions such as choice of ion source, or plate evaluation technique. The result is that these questions are often decided on the basis of individual prejudice. The authors have done an excellent job of presenting each side of such questions.
