Fast-Slow Coincidence Circuit Model DZ4 offers the nuclear scientist the fastest, c o m m e r c i a l l y - a v a i l a b l e coincidence circuit for advanced radiological research. Model DZ4 is specifically designed for use with two Detectolab G a m m a R a y Spectrometers; delay line modification permits channel analyzers having different transit times. • Coincidence selectivity of any two or all three channels (fast sum and two slow channels). • FAST channel resolving time 0.01 /*sec to several iisec. • FAST channel counting to 40,000 coincidence cps. • Delay between fast and slow coincidence changeable with no circuit modification. • Elimination of need for elaborate cooling system for photomultiplier tubes.

ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY

requirements involved in getting radioactive materials from the Atomic Energy Commission. Others are shielding and safety problems and techniques and equipment to handle radioactive materials. Inertia caused by wartime classification, problems involved with burying analytical procedures in unclassified project and progress reports of persons working with these techniques have also hindered the exchange of information between analysts familiar with the nuclear techniques and those who have not had such data available. The attitudes of analysts are shaped to a large extent by the opportunities for training, and these will, therefore, influence the future development of nuclear analytical techniques. A look at the programs in industry, universities, and government-supported atomic laboratories is helpful in appraising the current situation.

There are many university lecture courses, both elementary and advanced, to teach students the fundamental concepts of radioactivity and advanced aspects of nuclear theory. What is lacking is the opportunity t o obtain laboratory experience commensurate with this theoretical knowledge. In addition to the problems associated with instrumental methods, radioactivity involves handling and safety problems. The student, therefore, needs laboratory experience if he is to become interested in using nuclear techniques. In most cases the student gets laboratory experience by taking
