The Cbemistrv Denartment at the Universitv of Alahama in Birmineham bas been activelv involved for several v e m " in providing community-orientedprograms in chemistry. This has ranged fnnn "chemktry for kids" w workshops and drive-in conferences for chemisrry teachers. However, one of our most sucreasful ventures has been the Chemistry for Buy Scout Merit Badge program. In order toeam the Merit Badge in Chemistry, Boy Smutsarerequired toshow a basic understandkg of certain chemical ~rinciples. They must comolete a series of activities in several areas of chemistry including oxidation-reduction, acid-base, pollution, phat&ynthesis,md biochemistry. As a major requirement, the Scout must visit a plant that uses chemicals or e laboratorv. He must also be able to describe different kinds of work done bv chemists, chemical engineers, and chemical technicians. In order to help thescouts meet theae requirements, the Chemktry Depanment at UAB hasorganized weekend programs to give the boys "hands-on" experienrev. Todate, we haveconducted five programs, with twenty Smuts in each. Graduate studcntr in chemistry assist the younpters in obtaining materials, setting up equipmmt, conducting difficult experiments. and seeking solutions to questions raised in the merit badge phamplet. Emphasis is given to Laboratory safety. Everyone benefits when we open up the "biggest chemistry set in town" to these Smuts. The Scouts, especially those from low income areas, have an opport&ity to useour equipment and get expert guidance in chemistry. It also gives a select group of bright, ambitious youngsters an opportunity to work in a university laboratory. We in the Chemistry Department students an onnortunitv would not be disnleased if thev should later decide to attend UAB! It eives the eraduate " .. " to eain valuable experience in community service. And, it gives parents a chance to see what is happening to their education tax dollar. Although our program has been a great success, we are not in the business of selling merit badges. We have no authority to award the merit badge. The Scouts are given check-sheets indicating to their Scout Masters exactly what they aeeomplished toward the total requirement. I t is then up to the Scout Master to decide when the badge has been earned. We feel that this program fulfils one of the important functions of an urban university. We will be pleased to provide additional information and program outlines upon request. ~~~~~~
