BUSINESS

HP sells SFC business to Berger Hewlett Packard has sold its supercritical fluid chromatography business to Berger Instruments (BI), a new company being formed by Terry Berger and Mark Shuman, both of HP. The agreement grants BI license to HP's SFC patents and technology as well as for certain LC components of the instrument. The sale of the SFC instrumentation, along with earlier sales of the HP Optimized Robot for Chemical Analysis (ORCA) system to SAGIAN and the IR detector to Bio-Rad, is the result of HP's recent assessment and streamlining of its product offerings.

J&W Scientific to regain independence Cofounder Walter Jennings and other members of J&W Scientific's management, with financing from Saratoga Partners, have signed an agreement to acquire J&W from Fisons pic for $35 million in cash. J&W Scientific was founded in 1974 and sold to Fisons' U.S. laboratory supplies distributor Curtin Matheson Scientific in 1986. Bob Clarke, president of J&W, will continue in that role after completion of the transaction.

Perkin Elmer restructures Perkin Elmer has announced that it is restructuring its operations into four global business units: inorganic, organic, chromatography, and life sciences. Each unit will control its own research and development, marketing, sales, service, and finance. The four groups will share some of the administration and manufacturing activities. According to the company, Joe Malandrakis will manage the new inorganic business unit; Peter Macintyre will lead the chromatography group; Dave Binkley, former vice president of the analytical instruments division, will lead the organic business unit; and Mike Hunkapiller will continue to manage the life sciences group. Peter Barrett, former head of worldwide sales and service, will be responsible for corporate strategic planning and business development.
