Born in Hong Kong, the award win ner received a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Japan's Nagoya Uni versity in 1947. Following two years of postgraduate work with Louis Fieser at Harvard University, he returned to Nagoya University, where he complet ed a Ph.D. in 1954. He stayed on as a professor until 1958, and then became a professor of chemistry at Tokyo Kyoiku University. In 1963, he was ap pointed professor at Sendai's Tohoku University, and remained there until 1980, when he immigrated to the U.S. to assume his present position. Nakanishi has published some 550 papers and authored, coauthored, or edited eight books in such far-reaching fields of research as isolation, structur al, and bioorganic studies of bioactive compounds; retinal proteins; interac tion between bioactive compounds and receptors; circular dichroic spectrosco py; and structural studies of oligosac charides. He has been the recipient of many international awards, including, earlier in his career, the Chemical Society of Japan's Award in Pure Chemistry. More recently, he won the 1989 Nation al Institutes of Health Merit Award, the 1990 ACS Arthur C. Cope Award, and the 1990 Imperial Prize of the Japan Academy. Q
