News awards, given by the Division in the last several years, are designed to encourage the recipients' interest in chemistry in general and particularly in analytical chemistry.

Mills to Receive Lippincott Award The Optical Society of America has announced that Ian M. Mills, professor of chemistry at the University of Reading, will receive the 1981 Ellis R. Lippincott Award at the society's annual meeting to be held Oct. 27-30. Mills will be recognized for his contributions to the understanding of the structure and properties of small polyatomic molecules. Specifically, he will be cited for his method of analyzing intensity perturbations to determine the sign of transition moments and for his work on the applications of computers to this type of spectroscopy. The award, consisting of a medal and a scroll, was jointly established in 1975 by the Optical Society of America, the Coblentz Society, and the Society for Applied Spectroscopy. Presentation of the award rotates among the meetings of the sponsoring organiza-

tions. The Lippincott Award is presented annually in recognition of significant contributions in vibrational spectroscopy.

ACS Committee Solicits Suggestions for Reagents The American Chemical Society Committee on Analytical Reagents is seeking suggestions on the reagents for which it should provide specifications and testing methods. The committee plans to meet Oct. 29 and 30 at ACS headquarters in Washington, D.C., to consider the specifications and testing methods for chemicals used as reagents in analytical testing. These will be compiled in a new edition of "Reagent Chemicals—ACS Specifications." Suggestions for additional reagents should be directed to the committee's chairman, Wallace G. Rohrbough, Union Carbide Corporation, Technical Center, P.O. Box 8361, South Charleston, W.Va. 25303.
