This announcement serves to inform the community of our need to fill this position in the near future and to encourage nomination of prospective candidates suitable for the position. T
he Journal of Chemical Education is seeking a team leader to organize, develop, and coordinate our precollege chemistry section. The section serves an extraordinary community of secondary school, middle school, and homeschool teachers of chemistry who use JCE in many creative and exciting ways. It is our desire to continue to provide precollege educators with an outstanding publication and associated services that facilitate teaching chemistry with creativity and passion. Our current leaders of the JCE precollege chemistry section, Erica Jacobsen and Laura Slocum, have announced their decision to step down from their positions as Associate Editor, Precollege and Assistant Editor, Precollege, respectively, following the completion of their five-year terms. Although Erica and Laura will no longer hold these titles, they intend to remain involved with JCE and its precollege community. We have appreciated and respected their work these past years. It is our desire for the Journal of Chemical Education to be a nexus of publication, communication, discussion, and sharing among precollege educators. By melding cutting-edge research into how chemistry is learned, with new ideas on how to best acquire and communicate knowledge of chemistry, JCE provides a unique vehicle for professional development for precollege educators. We believe that current and future communication technologies can be employed to grow and strengthen our precollege community, helping precollege educators better meet their rapidly changing needs. We seek an individual who can help to implement this vision.
The time commitment and compensation are to be negotiated, although with the expectation that a 50% FTE will be required of a successful candidate. A term of commitment of three years to the position is desired. An initial six-month review and subsequent annual reviews of the position will be conducted. As an associate editor, participation in the Journal’s Editorial Advisory Board and associate editor activities is required; this and participation in activities of the precollege community may involve some travel to meetings.

’ WHAT THIS POSITION ENTAILS The individual that we seek must be a proven team leader who has demonstrated the ability to organize, coordinate, and direct a group of like-minded individuals toward a common goal. Experience leading and motivating a group of volunteers to work in conjunction with a dedicated staff is highly desired. Above all, a strong passion for the Journal of Chemical Education and the ability to instill that passion in others is paramount. The ideal candidate will have a high degree of knowledge about the current use of science standards and assessment tools and their impact. Strong communication skills and competence with technology are a must. This forward-looking individual should be knowledgeable about the past activities of JCE in the precollege realm, yet need not be wedded to continue all such activities.
