Government Regulations For Ethyl Alcohol Described In Booklet A new, updated edition of a U.S.I.® booklet is now available which describes government regulations pertaining to the purchase and use of ethyl alcohol. Although no radical changes in required procedures have been instituted, there are several points which alcohol users should be aware of. For example, directors of I.R. S. Service Centers now issue the special tax stamps to non-beverage users of pure

New Ethyl Alcohol Plants Being Built By U.S.I. Expansion to Meet Burgeoning Demand in Cosmetics and Chemical Process Industries Two new U . S . I , ethyl alcohol plants are on the drawing boards. The first will be located in Tuscola, Illinois, and will be on stream by September 1971, with full production by December of that year. Using a patented direct hydration process developed by U.S.I, research, the plant

It will assure continued supply of the high quality Punctilious Alcohol for which U.S.I. is known. Plans call for phasing out the company's existing Tuscola facilities which employ the ethyl sulphate process to produce 57 million gallons of alcohol a year. The second new plant, also to use the direct hydration process, will be

industrial ethyl alcohol is approximately 350 million gallons a year (fiscal year 1968 figures). Cosmetics and toiletries are expected to consume a large part of the expanded capacity during the coming decade. Growing at the rate of about 7% a year, these products have pretty much left the luxury category and have become virtually as necessary to most people as the clothes they wear. Ethyl alcohol is also used as an intermediate in the synthesis of a number of other chemicals which are exhibiting healthy growth. Among (continued on next page)

U.S.I. Sulfuric Plant Capacity

Acid Increases

U. S. I. is expanding the capacity of its sulfuric acid plant near De Soto, Kansas, to 300 tons a day. Costing $180,000, the project will raise production about 40% over the present 220 tons. This is the third expansion since the plant began operations in 1950 with a capacity of 120 tons a day. The existing plant is being modified with a blower turbine, exhaust condenser and wooden cooling tower. By increasing conversion efficiency, plant

Dryers Unitech division of Union Tank Car Co. has added a fluid-bed processor to its systems of evaporators and crystallizers. Unitech recommends the dryer for multiunit operations, such as desolventizing and calcining. Bowen Engineering now offers both fluid-bed and pneumatic conveying types of dryers, in addition to its existing line of spray dryers. Bowen says that it can now furnish air-suspended drying equipment for liquid and granular materials to meet any desired final moisture content. A 300-ft 3 tubular vacuum dryer, shown below, is available from Patterson-Kelley Co. The maker says that a normal drying cycle of 36 hr can be compressed to 14 hr with the tubular vacuum dryer. The design provides heat transfer tubes inside the unit to speed heating and cooling by exposing the material to an increased surface area. Luwa Corp. is introducing a thinfilm dryer to augment its line of thinfilm process systems. Under license from Lurgi, of Frankfurt, West Germany, Koch Engineering Co. offers complete pilot plant service, engineering, and equipment for Lurgi nozzle and centrifugal designs of spray drying systems.

Mixers and blenders Patterson-Kelley has a convertible twin-shell blender that allows a processor to adapt different types of internal agitating or liquid-feed devices to a solids-solids blender. The internal bar adaptations include a minimum-attrition liquid dispersion bar, as shown at the right, for liquid addition to very friable products that cannot tolerate breakdown. Chemetron has a mixer that, having characteristics of a centrifugal pump built into it, can repeat the mixing of the same batch of material many times. Recycling or recirculation can be accomplished regardless of the net flow of material through the system, provided material flows continuously from a supply tank. Another major feature is built-in, precise control over the intensity of mixing or beating action. A vibro-energy multichamber grinding mill by Sweco is designed for testing and sampling as many as five different materials simultaneously. There are five separate testing chambers with a working capacity of about one pint

Allen-Bradley's Sonic P-250... the end of shake/rattle/roll in production sifting. High precision sifting with a single pass. Sonic sifting is a revolutionary new principle in the separation of dry particles. An oscillating column of air moves the particles, not the screen. Result: dramatic reduction of blinding problems, the end of costly recycling and rejected production. Precision single pass separations, automatically controlled. A-B's new P-250 gives you precise control of particle size, assurance of repeatability, and confidence that you're getting the most out of thruput. In short, it eliminates a traditional trouble spot in your process control.

Our Sonic Sifter must out-perform your present shake/ rattle/roll equipment before you buy. Specialists in Allen-Bradley's customer service laboratory will sample sift your material. If you wish you can witness sample runs. We figure positive proof of performance is more convincing than promises. Contact Rod Salzwedel, Allen-Bradley Co., 1201 S. Second Street, Milwaukee, Wisconsin 53204,

of corrosion. This valve eliminates the need for an additional, externally installed trap. From Rustrak, miniature strip chart recorders are available. They are lightweight, use little power, are resistant to harsh environments, and provide a permanent record by a clean dry writing process according to Rustrak. Robertshaw has a program controller for repetitive batch processing, such as textile dyeing. It is a proportional controller with a digital setpoint adjusting mechanism for use with a multichannel digital input device such as a tape reader. By providing additional channels in the programer, digitally controlled functions in the process control system, such as opening and closing fill and drain valves, starting timed holding periods, and starting and stopping motor-driven equipment, can be performed. Delta Scientific has a series of automatic analyzer/ controllers for continuous monitoring and control of a wide variety of water, wastes, and process liquids tests. The instruments include models for automatic spectrophotometric wet chemistry analysis and systems with ion selective and other continuous probe measurements. The monitors are designed so that they can automatically control the operation of process valves, chemical feed pumps, and alarms. Hallikainen has an oil-on-water detector for water pollution control. The detector, floating on the surface of the water, uses the reflectivity of the stream surface to measure degrees of pollution due to oil.

Bailey Meter has a solid-state oxygen analyzer for monitoring and controlling atmospheres or for monitoring and controlling combustion processes, especially where low-excess air is a requirement. The instrument measures the oxygen concentration of gas mixtures in various ranges: 0 to 0.5%; 0 to 100%. Anacon's Model 106 moisture analyzer uses as its operating principle the absorption of near-infrared energy by moisture. The instrument provides a noncontact, continuous, on-line measurement of moisture in a wide range of materials. Typical applications include measurement in paper, cellophane, film, instant coffee, tea, soap, detergents, chemicals, rubbers, sand, clay, tobacco, and fibers. There is, however, a minimum moisture level for the analyzer. An electronic absolute pressure transducer by Motorola measures pressure with direct reference to a vacuum, thus eliminating effects of atmospheric pressure variation. It has no mechanical linkages and, Motorola says, friction, sensitivity, linearity, and adjustment problems are virtually eliminated. Clark-Reliance has entered the environmental control field with its dry steam humidifier for the chemical processing industries. The humidifier separates, filters, strains, and finally superheats steam to remove entrained droplets. An automatic, floatoperated drain valve, incorporated into the humidifier to remove condensate as it is formed, minimizes the possibility

BRBil And the low purchase price is only part of the story. The new GAF Pressure Vessel Filter System* also reduces filtration operating costs, provides fast, efficient and versatile performance, and features a simplified, compact design.

Simplified, compact design. The new GAF Pressurized Filter System consists of just three basic parts: vessel, bag and restrainer. It weighs less than 60 pounds. Its space-saving measurements are approximately 34 inches high by 9 inches in diameter. And it's specially designed for fast, easy installation.

Low operating costs. With the exclusive GAF SNAP-RING® principle, you can change the filter bag in a matter of minutes —without any tools. Solids collected by the new system are confined to the filter bag— there's no need to spend valuable man-hours emptying and cleaning the inside of the vessel. You also minimize the cost of cleaning agents. In short, you lower your cost per gallon of throughput.

Versatile in operation. You can use the new pressurized system to filter a wide variety of chemicals, paints and other industrial liquids—for either product collection or clarification. Vessels are available in both mild steel and stainless steel and are ASME coded to 125 psi with a maximum AP of 50 psi. SNAP-RING bags (GAF Standard No. 1) are offered in AVISCOt Rayon, Nylon and Polypropylene fibers.

Efficient, micron-rated filtration. The performance-proven GAF SNAP-RING Filter Bag provides high solids-collection capacity, high flow rates, and long operating cycles with nominal micron ratings of 5,10,15, 25, 50, 100 and 200 (depending on the fiber).

Separators Centrifuges are getting bigger. Centrico says that its Westfalia TA-200 liquid-liquid separator is, with its 500gpm capacity, the largest centrifugal separator in the world. Design advances include built-in feed and discharge lines, sight glasses and gages; a hydraulic lift to raise the hood assembly; and quick disconnection of feed and discharge lines for easy disassembly. The TA-200 frame is gas tight and equipped for nitrogen connection. Power is supplied by a 75hp heavy-duty motor; a special design permits reverse-current braking. Centrico will also introduce the Westfalia SAK-20037 automatic desludger, rated at 220 gpm. For maximum clarifying efficiency, the desludger has closely spaced, highly polished disks. De Laval is also showing a high-capacity, self-cleaning, solids-ejecting centrifuge. The BRPX 217, shown at the right, has a maximum overflow capacity of 260 gpm. With its self-triggering solids discharge device, the machine discharges sludge automatically. Because it is activated only by solids buildup, it prevents false triggering and loss of product. The BRPX 217 can handle feed slurries with solids concentrations up to 10 or 12% by volume. A 100-in-diameter, multiplane, inertial vibrating screen separator is offered by Kason Corp. The firm's engineers say the 100-in model has four times the capacity of standard 48-in units now available, and that it will provide extremely accurate cuts with high productivity.

Dorr-Oliver will present its Iopor ultrafiltration system, which uses semipermeable membranes made of various organic polymers at pressures as low as 30 to 50 psi—in contrast to the 600 to 1500 psi usually associated with reverse osmosis. The Iopor system provides separation in the range 2000 to 2 million molecular weight. A hydrodynamic system provides continuous removal of retained material from membrane surfaces. A feed-bleed system controls retentate concentration. Other new filter developments include Multi-Clean, a simplified precoat system from Filterite; Pall Trinity Micro's filter housings, which are made of stamped and drawn components and offer high flow with low pressure drop; and AMF Cuno's Mi-

cro-Wynd II wound-fiber filter cartridges, which are said to maintain filtration integrity in all popular micrometer ratings while increasing flow rates up to 500% and dirt-holding capacities up to 100%. Swenson will demonstrate a semicontinuous peeler centrifuge. The Swenson Model HZ-63 is recommended for jobs with small particle size, low slurry concentrations, or separation of wash and mother liquor. The peeler is automated by hydraulically controlled accessories actuated through an electrical timing system. Dorr-Oliver will also introduce its new CableTorq thickener, which transmits torque via cables from drive trusses located above the solution or mud level. Overhead design permits CableTorq to remain in service two or three time longer between descalings, the maker says. Highlighting Otto H. York Co.'s display will be an operating demonstration of their Demister mist eliminator/ entrainment separator. Designed to improve performance of evaporators, scrubbers, and other process equipment, the unit is said to remove 9 9 . 9 + % of entrained liquid or mist from any vapor stream. Alpine American Corp. will unveil its new Model 32/100 Air-Jet sieve, for continuous sievings in particle sizes from 25 ^m and larger, with capacity from 50 to 700 lb/hr. Use of the aerodynamic principle leads to highaccuracy sieving without size reduction, Alpine says. The model is suited for continuous or batch operation.

THE SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY OF SAVING A PENNY.

(Or how penny pinching can hurt your product catalog) Sometimes a penny saved isn't a penny earned. Sometimes it's sales lost. Lost because product problems weren't solved. A M O C O IPA is a problem solver. Flexible unsaturated polyesters based on Isophthalic A c i d offer tensile strengths twice as high as those obtained with comparable phthalic formulations. IPA also helps products resist c h i p p i n g , c r a c k i n g , and crazing.

And fight corrosion. Want some examples of how IPA's inherent toughness has improved products? Automotive parts. Bowling balls. Surfboards. Tanks and tank linings. Bathroom fixture components and sanitary gel coats for bathroom fixtures. Serving trays. Golf carts. Snowmobiles. Ice boats. All of these were made better with Isophthalic A c i d .

It may cost a few pennies to improve your product with IPA. But it's a small price to pay for customer satisfaction. For a booklet on how IPA improves products, see your A m o c o sales representative. Or write t o : Amoco Chemicals Corporation, Department 10203, 130 East Randolph Drive, Chicago, Illinois 60601.

KEMAMIDE Ε

1,000 SQUARE YARDS OF POLYETHYLENE TREATED FOR 240 Over 9 0 % of polyethylene producers use HumKo's KEMAMIDE E to insure the proper amount of anti-block and controlled slip so vital to high speed, high quality production.

HUMKO P R O D U C T S CHEMICAL DIVISION WHITE STATION TOWER MEMPHIS-TENNESSEE 38101

KEMAMIDE E (erucamide) is a long chain amide that, among other applications, imparts the required delicate balance in the film to eliminate polyethylene's natural resistance to vertical separation [block] while providing the proper, controlled slip. KEMAMIDE treated films, therefore, have the optimum handling, print, adhesive and sealing qualities required for further fabrication. As with KEMAMIDE E, all Humko amides have one or more applica tions where they are chosen not alone for the unique functions they provide, but, just as importantly, for their proven consistency of quality. Samples of any or all of the KEMAMIDES are yours on request.

Product directory This C&EN list categorizes some of the equipment or services being offered by companies participating in the 32nd Exposition of Chemical Industries. The headings aren't detailed or encompassing listings, therefore this directory does not include all of the enormous number of items being shown at the exposition. Thus browsing at the show is recommended. The major headings list: • The company name followed by the booth number in parentheses. When a company is exhibiting in more than one booth, only the lowest numbered booth is given. • The main attractions being shown by a company, with a limit of four listings per company or major division. A product identified as new has, according to the company, been introduced within the past three or four months. Also, such products are more than slight modifications of previously existing equipment. The Company Directory, an alphabetical listing of the companies participating in the exposition, starts on page 12A

L 6 S G l y C O l S . W e C a n S h i p ! If that sounds like a modest headline, it's because the ethylene glycols (mono-, di- and tri-) continue in relatively snug supply. Fortunately, our latest and largest ethylene oxide plant (on stream mid '68) placed us in a good position to meet our customers' requirements in ethylene glycols. The myriad uses of these glycols have become rather commonplace, but we still have a detailed brochure that may be helpful and it's yours for the asking. More important, we're ready to ship these glycols now in virtually any quantity you require .. . Jefferson Chemical Company, Inc., P. 0. Box 53300, Houston, Texas 77052. Randv sneakers endorsement for yourself. NATSYN® synthetic polyisoprene rubber has

helped make Randy sneakers standard equip ment in pro tennis and basketball. And earned them the signatures of standout pros like Bob Cousy, shown at his summer camp for boys. We're not going to tell you that NATSYN makes any difference in basketball scores. But it sure makes a difference for Randolph Rub ber Mfg. Co., the company that makes the sneakers. It means they don't have to clean, guillotine, premasticate or constantly curesample the rubber that goes into these shoes. (NATSYN polyisoprene comes in wrapped 75-lb. bales, bands within minutes and cures with almost boring regularity. ) Yet in other ways NATSYN isn't so different.

It consistently gives high tensile, tear strength, modulus, elongation and compression set val ues. And doesn't give problems getting light color matches. Today's NATSYN is better than ever, and now you havefivetypes to choose from ( see table). So if you haven't heard what NATSYN poly isoprene can do for you lately, clip the coupon. NATSYN is the best way to save processing steps —and still maintain your good name. build-a-still It's a revolutionary new idea. And, like many revolutionary ideas, basically simple. Here's how it works. The basic parts of the still come as separate modules you can add on to one another. So the still expands as your needs grow. The basic Thermodrive™ Distillation System comes in a 50 gph configuration. When you need more, you simply bolt on another 50 gph module . . . again and again . . . all the way up to 1,000 gph. No need to tear down your old system. No need for major reinvestment. You expand.

Pj

i^^^^*

^::

gph, Thermodrive costs 38% less than comparable conventional systems.

The standard system puts out pyrogenfree water in the 1 to 1.5 megohm range For higher purity, and an organic count below measurability, simply add on the Hi-Purity Chamber. Either way, Thermodrive produces distillate faster than anything before. Within seconds after start-up. Another revolutionary idea: an optional air-cooled condenser. It completely eliminates the need for cooling water. So it pays for itself. Fast. Price? At 300

The organic glow.

Talk about crazy valence systems. Molybdenum will combine with 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 chlorine atoms (MoCh to MoCU). The most important member of this halide family is molybdenum pentachloride, which we sell. We sell it in crystalline form, carefully packed in glass bottles in a dry, inert atmosphere. Because it's oxidationprone and hygroscopic. (It's also volatile when heated a little.) As soon as you leave it around in air, it becomes an oxychloride of some kind. Which is OK if you want oxychlorides. Or if you're trying to derive hydrogen chloride from moist air. What's nice about our stuff is that it's uncommonly pure, and you can get uncontaminated molybdenum out of it since it contains no other metals. You can do this with dry hydrogen. In a two-body col lision with H2 at 900° C, the M0CI5 vapor yields a very fine powder of the metal. You can make it a three-body collision by providing a substrate, whereupon the sub strate will be coated with molybdenum. The purpose may be protective or catalytic. M0CI5 is also chemically active in solution. Again, the point is to avoid oxidation. This leaves a wide range of organic solvents that will happily enfold our product: chlorinated hydrocarbons such as CCU, and anhydrous solvents such as ethers, alcohols, ketones, esters, etc. In some cases, there's a reaction when it dissolves. You can use M0CI5 to chlorinate aromatic rings. It's possible to chlorinate phthalic anhydride partially or completely. M0CI5 has been suggested as a Lewis acid catalyst in organic reactions. Some people are mixing M0CI5 with plastics, lending them fire retardance and possibly cross-linking the poly mer. We're the only people who sell it. There's a fact-laden data sheet that goes into details. But the ultimate fact dispenser is us. Write.

Note carefully what happens when some panicky mole cule drops back to the ground state. If it's been hit by a UV photon and throws out a wavelength that makes sense to the eye, it's fluorescing. If it also has a conjugated structure decorated by aromatic rings, it's an organic phosphor. Possibly ours. We hope it is. Not that we have anything against inorganic phosphors. In fact, we manufacture more of them than any other kind. But organics deserve their innings. Take the simple fact that organics dissolve and inor ganics don't. That puts each in a different ball park. With organics, it's the molecule itself that fluoresces. With inorganics, it's the basic crystal structure, so you've got to have fair-sized particles to start with. Sometimes these don't work out so well. For instance, you can dissolve an organic phosphor in a volatile organic solvent to make a fluorescent ink for a felt marking pen. Inorganic particles would just clog up the felt. A dissolved phosphor deposits smoothly and dries out in the form of microcrystals. Organic phosphors are soft; inorganics are abrasive. Used in paint, organics won't wear out the rollers or other parts of the paint-making machine. Organics are generally brighter than inorganics under "black" light. Many have intense colors of their own in ordinary light, so you can use them as regular pigments with a built-in bonus of fluorescent color. The list of possible uses is long. (Think of how many dark places there are.) Use organics to give ordinary day time materials a special nighttime look. Create dramatic effects in theaters. Apply them in crime detection, map making, effluent tracing. (Finely powdered organics are so light, they blow around like cornstarch—so you can even use them to trace air currents.) We're hoping this glowing tribute will get you to think organically and encourage you to get in touch with us if you come up with a bright idea. Touche.

Pentalollipop MoCVs deliciously simple structure. Three Cl's form an equilateral triangle at the equator. Two hover over the Mo atom at the north and south poles. This is the gas phase (it's a dimer in crystal form).

Sometimes you can make points just by quoting the dictionary. As suppliers of molybdenum compounds to catalyst manufacturers, two sentences from the Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology touched our chemical-peddling hearts: "Molybdenum compounds may function as principal catalysts and also as activators and promoters of other catalysts. Particularly in the reactions involving petro leum and natural gas, the frequent interchangeability of sulfur and oxygen in molybdenum compounds is a highly useful property, since traces of sulfur may poison other catalysts but not those of molybdenum."

We're always glad to talk to you about tungsten, molybdenum and phosphor chemistry. Sylvania Metals & Chemicals, Chemical and Metallurgical Division, Towanda, Pa. Circle No. 60 on Readers' Service Card NOV. 10, 1969 C & E N

Too bad, old man! You would have seen that their exclusive Servo-Thrust Control ends bear ing wear due to thrust. That exclusive rotating bear ings with carbon or steel ele ments last many times longer. Advanced design with internal filtration helps, of course! And stator burnout, that old devil in canned pumps, is out. Electrical characteristics are ab solutely first rate. Temperature range from cryogenic to hightemp, heat transfer.

Exclusive, entirely In ternal Flow Through System of coolant liquid. Exclusive Rotating Bearings — Carbon Sleeve bearings rotate with shaft in easily replace-, able cap-type) journals. /

Stator remov able with ordi nary shop tools, can be replaced or rewound eas ily in the field.

ntegral's exclusive thrust control device — maintains hydraulic thrust balance at all times by servo feed back.

See for yourself: Can't afford downtime, you know. Next time if you need up to 700 gpm, at up to 330 feet of head, Go Eastern, Old Man!

These unsaturated dibasic acids have a wide range of polymer applications. Their unusual multi-functionality results in some highly specialized and unique properties. Itaconic acid, for example, improves the adhesive properties of latices. And its diesters are equally versatile. Itaconic and fumaric acids are monomers available in quantity from Pfizer. Ask your Pfizer representative about them. Or, write our nearest Regional Office direct for technical literature.

Most oxygen monitors detect one part in a million. Ours does it 209 times faster. (That makes it one in a million. maybe?)

Why did we make the Westinghouse Model 209 Oxygen Monitor the fastest you can buy? Because with oxygen detection, time is critical. In non-combustible gas production, metal treatment, food and pharmaceutical processing, silica manufacture, and chemical production, seconds count when it comes to oxygen. A batch has to be reprocessed or even scrapped. Processing equipment can be damaged. The Westinghouse Oxygen Monitor gives

you better than one-part-Jn-a-million answers (0.8 ppm) in well under one second. In time to let you (or it) make the right adjustments. It's used whenever oxygen must be detected in non-combustible gases.. For combustible gases, ask about our newly designed, portable, paramagnetic model 150. For full details on both, call or write Fred Hammett, Westinghouse Specialty Electronics Division, 7800 Susquehanna Street, Pittsburgh, Pa. 15221. Code412-256-5192.

Naturally, there are good sentimental reasons to be interested in Kenite Diatomite; but we prefer the more practical considerations. Take the matter of service, of consistent quality, or the matter of technical accuracy in processing and classification. These are solid grounds. Ask for our brochure. It has a minimum of poetry in it and a generous amount of useful information. Our fast-growing list of consistent customers is a logical result of Kenite's accurate specifications and performance.
