Summary The influence of precious metals extends far into our industrial and social structure. Use of precious metals is vital for the smooth functioning of a number of multibillion-dollar enterprises, including the fields of investments, jewelry, dentistry, photography, and electronics. Nor should we forget the area of precious-metal-bearing catalysts vital for the production of chemicals and petroleum products and for the control of ambient air quality. At every step of the precious metal cycle, analytical requirements ranging from the determination of the composition of products to the control of impurities must be met. Of particular complexity is the analysis of precious metal scrap with its variable composition. The major developments in methodology for the analysis of precious metals have been assisted by the emergence of powerful instrumental tools. The interfacing of chemical and instrumental techniques undoubtedly will be increasingly assisted by the introduction of automation and data processing. Still, despite all the technical advances, it is fascinating to speculate that at some time in the future the electronic scrap that results from work in outer space may be analyzed by techniques conceived more than 3000 years ago. Returning to earth from outer space . . . interested readers can learn of developments in the precious metals field, including analytical techniques, from the International Precious Metals Institute.
