What Are the Fields of Application for Super Refractories? Super
refractories
by
tual selection of super refractories can be based only on the specific operating conditions involved. T h e field of application for super refractories is limited only by t h e economic justification of their cost. In some installations they are used to implement other refractories to improve overall life. I n still other cases they may completely replace common refractories to increase production, improve quality of work a n d even make new processes possible. At the right are some of the applications in which their special properties are used to good advantage.
CARBORUNDUM
have been used with excellent results in a wide range of industrial kilns and furnaces a n d for certain other specialized applications. They have demonstrated that, wherever refractories are used, it is possible that super refractories may b e profitably adapted to specific areas of recommended usage. However, in spite of their wide range of use, there is n o pat formula for application — each new installation must be considered individually. Service requirements vary so between units, that even comparable furnaces may develop conditions demanding the use of different super refractories. Ac-

information obtained from the questionnaire and any other source. It is hoped that they can recommend a national meet ing program for the immediate future or further experiments that should be con ducted. The Committee on Analysis of Divided Meeting Results consists of Chester M. Alter, chairman, L. W. Bass, O. C . Dermer, N. L. Drake, C. S. Fuller, and A. E. Sidwell. All are members with broad experience as officers of local sec tions, divisions, and standing committees. It is important that some policy for the immediate future b e set. An organiza tion which is not fixing its schedules five years in advance has little opportunity to go where it wants when it wants. The shorter the time until the meeting, the more restricted the choice. This handicap is particularly acute for divided meetings which require consecutive dates for the various parts. The wheels have been started. Only the members can keep them rolling. At this stage, the completion and return of a questionnaire are the only way to provide motive power.
