The bulk of arsenic (As) at contaminated sites is frequently associated with iron (hydr)oxides. Various studies ascribe increasing dissolved As concentrations to the transformation of iron (hydr)oxides into iron sulfides, which is initiated by dissolved sulfide. We investigated whether this processes can be utilized as a source treatment approach using compost-based permeable reactive barriers (PRB), which promote microbial sulfate reduction.
