We took our four circle x-ray diffractometer and made it fully automatic, computer-controlled. (Was it really worth it?) That parenthetical question is hardly a flippant one. With computerization becoming so commonplace, it is perhaps too easy to focus on the computer hardware and the benefits accruing therefrom, and to be too easily diverted from these fundamental questions: "Does the basic system produce valid data?" "Is the system worthy of computerization?" These key questions take on special significance because so many companies are automating in similar ways and with very similar computer equipment. Accordingly, comparing the merits of the available systems really becomes primarily a matter of assessing the disparities of the basic data-collecting systems rather than those of the automating segments. Which, then, leads to this claim: our four circle x-ray diffractometer generates truly valid data and is truly worthy of computerization. This four circle x-ray diffractometer with full circle goniostat —in widest use throughout the world —was designed to collect valid data and to provide maximum

versatility consistent with the basic requirement for the collection of reliable information. Example: the goniostat's large inside diameter (10") and its rugged construction permit the mounting of special attachments without causing difficulties. Or: all existing goniometer heads can be used with this goniostat. Or: the controls and motors for chi and phi do not orbit (which nicely minimizes obstruction and eliminates cable-tangling). The total system has, of course, many other things to recommend it. Briefly: this is a "closed loop" system which can automatically adapt the program as dictated by collected data; either the PDP-8 or PDP-8S computers can be utilized; all four angles can be positioned simultaneously to save time; system can also be manually controlled. Three final points should be made: (1) we provide the required software, (2) we take complete systems responsibility for the x-ray system, interface and computer, and (3) we can deliver in 90 days.
