Computerized Indexing of Reprints and Bound Articles Most chemists accumulate a sizable collection of journal articles releted to their teaching and research interests. This collection is usually in the form of reprints, photo copies, and bound originals. Frequently these are indexed in a card file, hut only under the senior author and one or two subject headings. Too often, they are catdogued only in the mind. Both card files and memories become inadequate as the collection grows. A Fortran IV computer program has been written to reference each article in such a. collection 1)by senior author, 2) by junior authors (up to five), 3) by journal, 4) by date of publication, 5) by keywords (up to twenty), and 6) by file number. The title and keywords can include up to 219 characters and spaces. The program as written requires the DISCSORT capability found in the IBM Model 360 series. With slight modification, it can be adapted to the "sort" programs of other computer systems. The capacity of the program (maximum number of articles) is limited only by the capacity of the system's sort program. Currently underway in our Department is a project involving 6,000 articles with about 40,000 keywords. A sourcelisting of the program and sample output are availableupon request. S.
