Jaromir Ruzicka and Louis Scampavia of the University of Washington describe a new methodology that combines the advantages of solid-phase chemistry with the novelty of fluidic handling of microcarrier beads. Chemical reactions occur at the bead surfaces and can be analyzed in real time; then, at the end of the measurement cycle, the beads are discarded, collected, or rerouted.
