As has been the case with most of the previous volumes devoted to the review of a few topical areas, this vol ume concentrates on an in-depth re view of two areas of electroanalytical chemistry. T h e first chapter on chemisorption at electrode surfaces is con tributed by Ronald Woods of Victoria, Australia. This chapter provides a critical review of the work carried out in determining t h e nature of t h e hy drogen and oxygen layers on noble metals and discusses in detail the in-
formation these studies have provided with respect to the fundamental prop erties of the noble metal surfaces. T h e introduction sections deal with ad sorption in general and present some experimental aspects of studies at the electrode/solution interface. In the following sections, platinum metal is discussed at considerable length since this metal has received t h e greatest at tention. Discussion of the other metals is limited largely to t h e differences in their adsorption behavior from t h a t of platinum. Finally, a brief outline of the influence of the adsorption of hy drogen and oxygen on other processes occurring at noble metal electrodes is presented. Chapter two, written by Arnim Henglein of Germany, is enti tled "Pulse Radiolysis and Polarography: Electrode Reactions of ShortLived Free Radicals". T h e introduc tion section stresses the importance of the polarographic behavior of short lived free radicals, not only for the purpose of detection and identifica tion of these radicals, b u t also from the point of view of the kinetics of electrode reactions. T h i s chapter, much shorter t h a n the other, is divid ed into four sections on description of the method, kinetics of radical reac tions, theoretical considerations about polarographic waves of radicals, and polarograms and electrode reactions of various radicals. T h e book is a good quality reproduction of typewritten text.
