Acknowledgment The authors are indebted to Dr. Yoshihiro Watanabe of Sumitomo Chemical Company, Ltd., Tokyo, for providing a crude monomer of 4-vinylpyridine and valuable suggestions for the present work. They also acknowledge Dr. Tadatoshi Ota of Tokushima University for his stimulating discussions on the vinyl polymerization. The SEM observations were made by courtesy of the staff of Department of Mechanical Engineering, Tokushima University. L i t e r a t u r e Cited Finltbeiner, H., Hay, A. K0.030 the initial oxidation rates were linear with the benzaldehyde concentration and independent of the Co" acetate and oxygen concentrations. The first-order rate constant has a value of 9 X lo-' min-' (25 "C). For autoxidations of benzaldehyde inhibited by phenols the same kinetics and the same rate constant were found (Hendriks et al., 1977). I t follows therefore that CO" acetate acts as an inhibitor for the autoxidation of benzaldehyde in the same manner as phenols. A t longer reaction times, when considerable amounts of CoIII acetate have been formed, the oxidation of benzaldehyde
