Disposable Macromolecular Model "Kits" I wish to suggest the use of colored pipe cleanen (commercially availablefrom B. J. Long, 163 Saint Paul St., Rochester, N.Y., 14604, in packets of nine differently colored cleaners) for the construction of three dimensional models of polymers, particularly enzymes and other globular proteins. The colored cleaners, cut to suitable lengths, are useful to indicate specific chain segments (where sequence is known) and can he joined simply by twisting ends together. Different colored lengths may be used to indicate block and graft polymers. The models are rapidly constructed from perspective drawings of polymers, both synthetic and biological. For example, one may use the yellow cleaners for tying chains together where dissulfide cross links are indicated. Helical structures and sheets are easily constructed. These simple models give the viewer a good conception of the grass contours, interior volumes, and chain rigidity of polymers.
