Dowanol® 1 and Dowanol 2B are recommended for use as high boiling solvents. These almost colorless liquids are excellent solvents for cellulose acetate, Ethocel® (Dow Ethylcellulose), nitro-cellulose, and other similar resins. Dowanol 1 and Dowanol 2B may also be used as chemical inter mediates. Dowanol 1 contains a primary hydroxyl group on a twocarbon chain while Dowanol 2B contains a secondary hydroxyl group on a three-carbon chain. Plasticizers, bactericidal agents, and fixatives for soaps and perfumes are suggested as possible end products based on these Dowanol products. A purified grade of both Dowanol 1 and Dowanol 2B is now avail able for applications where phenol content and metal impurities must be kept at a minimum.
