East Tennessee Holds 2nd Meeting-in-MiniaÉire The East Tennessee Section, ACS, held, its second annual mee tin g-in-mi mature at Oak Ridge, Tenu., June 1. Approximately 200 attended, and the program was restricted ï^ïfour papers, to allow each speaker ample t i m e to cover tihe tirnèl^ topics selected. A. D. B/Ielavcsn spoke on "Rlienium, Its Occurrence, Recovery, and Properties". This transitional element does not occur in nature in concentrations higher than a few parts per million. Flue dust concentrates from the roasting of molybdenite have been investigated. Douglas Hill discussed "Chemistry of t h e Stable Isotopes". At present there is demand for isotopes of the nonradioactive elements for nuclear studies. Nuclear properties as determined from radioactive decay products A. O. must be checked wherever possible by repeating the measurements on t h e much larger amounts of material which should become available from isotope separations. The subject of C. D. Coryell was "Fission Produces'*. The development of piles and the large-scale separation of plutonium from the products of fission chain reac lions required an extensive program of such radiochemical study. Groups a t the Clinton Laboratories, Iowa S^tate College, the University of California, and the Hanford Engineer Works have given a great deal of new information o n the radioactive properties. R. W. Stoughton talked on "Chemistry of the Transuranic Elements", discussing four methods for the separation of plutonium from uranium and fission products.
