Processing of Manuscripts From the viewpoint of both authors and readers, promptness of publication is a goal worthy of utmost effort. Recent changes in the procedure, especially in moving toward computerized photocomposition have caused temporary dislocations which during the past year have led to unsatisfactory delays in certain instances. A major change is that with the old procedure of hot metal type, corrections were relatively easy to make both in galleys and pages. Today, galley corrections are difficult and page changes are extraordinarily expensive. T h e latter are to be avoided except when factual correctness is a t stake. Changes in figures are now also expensive and to be avoided if a t all possible. The Washington editorial staff has made ‘adjustments in their operating routine to conform to the new publication procedure. Once again we are operating near the ideal “zero backlog” in which the only delays are those unavoidable in an orderly operation of a monthly periodical undergoing a thorough manuscript review process. The purpose of this editorial is to point out to authors what steps they can take to ensure minimization of delays between submission of a manuscript and its appearance in the Journal. First of all, all categories of articles, whether full papers, notes, aids, or correspondence receive the same treatment, altered only by the complexity of the particular case. Close adherence to the suggestions in our Manuscript Requirements and guides for nomenclature published in the December issue of each year (see Anal. Chem., 46, 2257-60, 1974) is urged. Sending the manuscript directly to the Editor in Florida will only slow down its processing, which begins in the Washington editorial office. Authors can speed publication by careful preparation of their manuscripts to attain utmost brevity consistent with clarity of expression, by preparing adequate figures, by revising their manuscripts promptly, taking into account all reviewers’ comments either by rebuttal or revision, and by returning their corrected galleys promptly, making only truly necessary changes. For its part, the editorial staff will promptly send out manuscripts for review, follow up on slow reviewers, and without undue delay reach decisions as to the need for additional review and acceptance, rejection, or revision of manuscripts. If all parties to this complex process do their part, we can maintain an enviable record for promptness of publication.
