with the help of reviewers, the material submitted to them. Each journal has several categories in which the findings appear. Research papers describing original work make up the majority of the journal, but many journals publish other contributions-i.e., research notes, correspondence, letters to the editor, etc.-which are important but are not of sufficient length to warrant a full paper. ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY some time ago published Notes, but these were discontinued because authors were unhappy about the connotation of Notes. Since that time we have been publishing (in additiun to full papers) short papers, Scientific Communications, Correspondence, and Aids for the Analytical Chemists. We have in the past published crystallographic data and infrared summaries of methods, but these were dropped because material from authors was not forthcoming. We note in the May issue of Spectrochimica Acta that the editors are adding to their regular papers and research notes a new section, in a condensed format, for publication of emission spectrometric methods of analysis. It appears that the problems of concise presentation are still with us, and that authors-being human-often do not respond to this method of handling their work, which they claim downgrades their contributions. We carefully review all material submitted to ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY, and in spite of the opinions of some authors, we feel that if the material is acceptable for any category it has stature as far as the readers are concerned. We believe this holds for many other journals as well. When authors are readers, they often complain bitterly about wordiness or unnecessary information included in technical papers. We have been attempting to prevent this by publishing items as Correspondence or Aids when we feel they are appropriate for same. We do not, however, feel that by so doing we have downgraded the contribut,ion.
