Gerd M. Hermann holds a Diplom degree in physics (1967) and a Ph.D. (1971) from Justus-Liebig-Universitàt Giessen, Germany. His doctoral thesis on nonlinear and mode-crossing laser spectroscopy described the first measurements and theoretical explanations of nonlinear polarization spectroscopy. In 1975 he was appointed professor at the University Kassel, where he lectured on pure and applied physics and undertook research on fiberoptic sensors, laser spectroscopy, and atomic physics. In 1979 he joined the faculty of the University of Giessen. His interests include laser spectroscopy; Dopplerfree two-photon, two-photon excited quantum beat, and two-photon excited level-crossing spectroscopies; kyperfine structure; isotope shift; collisional processes; and analytical spectroscopy using continuum sources and lasers.
