N o r t o n ' s research fo cuses o n t h e design a n d preparation o f natural a n d artificial superlattices capable o f s u p p o r t i n g t h e exciton m e c h a n i s m of h i g h temperature superconductivity. A f t e r c o m p l e t i n g graduate w o r k i n t h e area of l a y e r e d antiferromagnetic materials u n d e r t h e d i rection o f W . S. G l a u n s i n g e r , N o r t o n took a position as a research c h e m i s t i n the N a v a l Weapons C e n t e r i n C h i n a L a k e , C a l i f o r n i a , w h e r e h i s investigations c e n t e r e d o n oxide superconductors, i n c l u d i n g the tungsten bronzes a n d b i s m u t h bronzes. S . from the U n i v e r s i t y of I l l i n o i s and was an assistant professor of c h e m i s t r y at the U n i v e r s i t y of Illinois before m o v i n g to G e o r g i a . H e was the r e c i p i e n t of a B e c k man Research A w a r d at t h e U n i v e r s i t y o f Illinois, a P r e s i d e n t i a l Y o u n g Investigator A w a r d from t h e N a t i o n a l Science F o u n d a t i o n , a n d an A l f r e d P. Sloan Research F e l lowship. Scott has coauthored m o r e than 50 research papers o n various aspects of i n o r ganic b i o c h e m i s t r y . A s i d e f r o m his expertise i n t h e application of X - r a y absorption spectroscopy to biological systems, h e has an active research p r o g r a m to study the mechanisms of long-range e l e c tron transfer i n metalloproteins. H e organized a n d c h a i r e d a s y m p o s i u m o n this subject i n 1987 at the A m e r i c a n C h e m i c a l Society m e e t i n g i n D e n v e r .
