Coprecipitation of Trace Metals by DNA and RNA Molecules 504

/ GC»MSD»FTIR.AA.ICP«LCIR

DNA and RNA are used as carriers of trace metals in water for coprecipitation preconcentration. The method allows for the preconcentration of trace metal ions except iron, calcium, and magnesium, which are intrinsically contained in DNA and RNA. Kitao Fujiwara*, Ri-e Kojyo, and Kazuma Okada, Faculty of Integrated Arts and Sciences, Hiroshima University, 1-1-89 Higashisenda-machi, Hiroshima 730, Japan and Yukio Kodama, Ocean Research Institute, The University of Tokyo, 1-15-1 Minamidai, Nakano-ku, Tokyo 164, Japan

KMflMUL OF THE AMERICAN SOCim FOR MASS SPECTROMETRY

T h e Journal o f the A m e r i c a n S o c i e t y for Mass S p e c t r o m e try publishes refereed, original research papers from all fields of scientific: inquiry in which mass spectrometry can play a role, including developments in both fundamentals and applications. C o n t r i b u t o r s investigate new instrumentation and methods, present new discoveries in ion chemistry, and develop p r o b l e m solving strategies. T h e Journal also publishes Short Communications, which contain ideas tor which some experimental or theoretical justification is presented (usually to be followed by a hill paper), and Accounts and Perspectives, including brief review articles and reflections on the state of research in mass spectrometry. 1990, Volume 1 (six issues) ISSN: 1044-0305 Subscription rate: $235.00 (outside USA, add S24.00 for postage). Asphaltenes in crude oils act as absorbers, not scatterers, in the near-IR spectral range. Addition of spectra from the asphaltene and maltene fractions of a crude oil reproduce the spectrum of the crude oil. Oliver C. Mullins, Schlumberger-Doll Research, Old Quarry Road, Ridgefield, CT 06877

7 15 N values produced by the combustion method differ by 0.11%o when compared with conventional methods. Because the gas contains less CO, the values are more accurate than those obtained by previously reported methods. Carol Kendall* and Elizabeth Grim, U.S. Geological Survey, 431 National Center, Reston, VA 22092 Suspended Trapping Procedure for Alleviation of Space Charge Effects in Gas Chromatography/Fourier Transform Mass Spectrometry 530 Low-ppm mass measurement accuracy over a 5 order of magnitude neutral concentration range is demonstrated for the FT-MS detection of gas chromatographic effluent.
