FACULTY POSITIONS IN BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING The University of Rochester invites applications for two new tenure-track positions in Biomedical Engineering to be filled at the Assistant Professor level. THE UNIVERSITY OF TOLEDO COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT OF BIOENGINEERING ADVERTISEMENT FOR TENURE TRACK FACULTY POSITIONS The University of Toledo, College of Engineering recently formed a new Department of Bioengineering. Master's and Doctoral level graduate programs in bioengineering are established and an undergraduate bioengineering degree program is expected to begin at the start of the Fall 1997 semester. The ten bioengineering faculty in the Department have close collaborations with life science faculty at the University, with faculty at the Medical College of Ohio, and other local medical institutions. Research interests of the Department include medical imaging, neuroscience, medical informatics, biochemical engineering, orthopaedic biomechanics, site-specific therapies, and artificial organs/tissue engineering. The College of Engineering also recently moved into a new state-of-theart educational and research complex. We are seeking to fill several associate and full professor positions at this time. Falck was honored for his contribu tions to natural products synthesis and his development of new synthetic proce dures involving organocopper and organopalladium chemistry. Falck has achieved total syntheses of several anticancer agents, various mammalian cellular mes sengers or metabolites, and more than four dozen eicosanoids. Falck thinks his most important work thus far has been the total synthesis of an antifungal agent that may be used in treating people with AIDS, who are particularly suscep tible to fungal infections. He has authored or coauthored more than 220 scientific publications. After postdoctoral fellowships at Im perial College, London, the University of Pittsburgh, and Harvard University, Falck became an assistant professor at the Uni versity of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in 1979. He was named a full pro fessor in the departments of molecular genetics and pharmacology in 1992.

Falck, who says that he was inspired to become a chemist by his high school chemistry teacher, received a B.S. degree in chemistry in 1970, and a Ph.D. degree in chemistry in 1973, both from Colo rado State University, Fort Collins. The section's Schulz Award for high school chemistry teaching consists of $250 and an engraved plaque. In addition, a traveling plaque is engraved with the winner's name and resides at the winner's school for one year. Award recipient Far rar received a B.S. degree in biology from Texas Wesleyan University, Fort Worth, in 1974. Three years later, he went back to Texas Wesleyan to get his teaching certifi cate and joined the staff of Joshua High School. Farrar was particularly honored for his lab demonstrations, such as building a methane generator with his students. He has the ability to reach all students, not only those headed toward careers in chemistry. One student with an aversion to math and science said, "No matter how far ahead the class became, [Farrar] was always willing to explain it to me one more time."^
