In the present work, a cell model is developed that is based on the film theory. In contrast to the existing pseudo-homogeneous models, the present approach retains a discreteness of the particles. The gas-liquid film is divided into cylindrical cells. The particles lie on the axes of the cells, and only those nearest to the interface contribute to the enhancement. The distance of these particles from the interface is exponentially distributed. The boundary element method is used to locate the reaction front. The computed flux is ensembleaveraged over the distribution of the particle locations. The effect of particle diameter and volume fraction of the solid on the enhancement factor is calculated. As the particles become finer, the enhancement factor increases significantly above the estimates of the pseudo-homogeneous models. An approximation to the cell model is also developed and is in good agreement with the rigorous model.

Introduction The problem of gas absorption into slurries that contain fine reacting/catalyst particles is frequently encountered in chemical industry. Examples include absorption of acid gases (e.g., SO2, CO2, H2S, Cl2, HCl, NOx) into a slurry of bases (such as Ca(OH)2, Mg(OH)2, CaCO3), halogenation of latex polymers, catalytic oxidation, hydrogenation, etc. When the particles are finer than the liquid diffusion film, their reactions with the dissolved gas near the gas/liquid interface enhances the rate of diffusion and, consequently, the rate of absorption of the gas. The enhancement is most pronounced when the reaction between the dissolved gas and the solute species is instantaneous. The purpose of the present work is to estimate of the enhancement factor for the instantaneous reaction using an approach that is different from that already existing in the literature. The film theory postulates existence of a reaction plane, which divides the liquid diffusion film in two distinct regions, viz., the region 0 < z < λ′ (see Figure 1), where only A exists in the solution, and the region λ′ < z < δ, where only B is present. At the reaction plane, the concentrations of both the species are zero and the diffusion fluxes are in the stoichiometric ratio so that A and B are completely consumed. The concentration profiles of A and B in the film are straight lines. Therefore, eq 5 implies that the reaction can be considered instantaneous only when the reaction zone is much thinner than the film. Based on the analysis presented by van Krevelen and Hoftijzer2 in the form of plots of the enhancement factor E0A versus the Hatta number Ha, with q as the parameter, the instantaneous reaction limit (given by eq 5) is determined to be almost attained when the ratio Ha/q is ∼30, which seems to be a reasonable number, given the interpretation presented in eq 7. When solute B is supplied by the dissolution of sparingly soluble fine particles present in the liquid, the reaction is represented by the following equations:

This problem was analyzed for the first time by Ramachandran and Sharma,3 who used the film theory. The dissolution of the particles is assumed to be sufficiently fast to maintain the bulk solution at saturation, with respect to B. If the particles are finer than the thickness of the film, their dissolution in the film modifies the concentration profiles of both A and B (see Figure 1), according to the following equations:

It is always >1, and the larger its magnitude is, the more effective the particles. A somewhat ambiguous quantity in the aforementioned model is ks, which represents the solid-liquid mass-transfer coefficient defined inside a gas-liquid film. This, in the parlance of the film theory, implies diffusion film within another diffusion film! Pal et al.4 recommended the value of ks, which yields a Sherwood number of unity (Sh ) 1), based on the particle radius Rp (ShRp ) ksRp/DB ) 1). This is the Sherwood number that is attained if a spherical particle is placed in an infinite stagnant liquid. This assumption is strictly valid in the limit when the ratio of film thickness to particle diameter in infinite. These conditions are satisfied reasonably well only by very fine particles at very low particle loadings. The model of Uchida et al. predicts a higher value of the relative enhancement factor than that based on the Ramachandran and Sharma model. Scala6 incorporated the effect of particle-particle interactions in the film by placing the particle in spherical cells of the fluid. The size of each cell is computed by assigning an equal volume of fluid per particle. Outside the cell, the concentration of A (or B) is uniform and corresponds to the local concentration. The diffusion of A and B inside the cell is considered for determining the rate of solid dissolution. This rate is used in the model of Uchida et al.5 to compute the rate of gas absorption. In effect, this model uses a solid-liquid diffusion film thickness that is equal to one-half of the mean interparticle spacing. The relative enhancement factor by the model can be obtained from the model of Uchida et al. (see eq 19) by replacing φp with φp/(φp-1/3 - 1). The Scala model predicts a lower enhancement factor value than Uchida’s model for φp < 0.125. The reverse is true for φp > 0.125. Uchida et al.,7 Sada et al.,8 and Scala6 extended the theory to the case where the bulk is not saturated, with respect to B. Uchida et al.9 used penetration theory to analyze this problem and obtained an analytical solution for equal diffusivities of the species. Mehra et al.10 analyzed the problem of absorption in a quiescent slurry, where the reaction plane moves with time.

Scala6 also accounted for the presence of gas-film resistance in computing the enhancement factor. All the models previously described can be classified as pseudo-homogeneous, i.e., they assume the solid phase to be microhomogeneously mixed with the liquid in the film, so that the discrete nature of the particles is completely lost. Although the assumption of homogeneity is reasonable in the region a few particle diameters away from the gas/liquid interface, very near the interface, the geometry of the particle, relative to that of the interface, is important for determining the enhancement. For example, consider a spherical particle in the vicinity of a planar interface. Different parts on the surface of the sphere will be located at different distances from the interface. Component A, which is diffusing from the gas/liquid interface into the liquid, will meet component B, which is diffusing outward from the particle surface, at different locations. Thus, we have a curved reaction front in the vicinity of the particle. Because of the fact that particles that are very close to the interface are the ones that distort the reaction front the most, they contribute most to the enhancement. Therefore, the details (such as shape of the particle, its orientation, and the distance of the particle from the interface) are important, in addition to particle size and particle loading. The inherent limitation of the pseudo-homogeneous models is that they cannot account for these details. Moreover, the pseudo-homogeneous models indirectly imply that particles cannot approach the interface closer than the thickness of the solid-liquid film. Thus, in the model that uses ShRp ) 1, the distance of the closest approach equals Rp. According to Scala’s model, the distance of closet approach decreases as the particle loading increases. No such limitation exists in reality and particles can approach arbitrarily close to the gas/liquid interface. These limitations of the existing models can be overcome using an approach that treat particles as distinct entities placed in the gas-liquid diffusion film and acting as sources of B. In the present work, we have developed a cell model to achieve this goal. The film is divided into cylindrical cells of equal volume. We consider spherical particles that are placed on the axes of these cells. The statistical distribution of the distances of the particles from the interface has been postulated. The reaction front is a now a curved surface, rather than a plane. We use the boundary element method to locate this front. The interfacial flux of A and the enhancement factor is then calculated as a function of the distance of the particle from the interface. Based on the distribution of the distances, the statistical average value of the enhancement factor is computed. The effects of the particle diameter, particle loading, ratio of the interfacial concentration of the reactants etc, have been evaluated. Finally, the enhancement factor is compared with the Uchida et al.5 model. The present model can be adapted to penetration theory. Also, a variety of factorssthe gas-film resistance, shape of the particle, change in the particle size due to dissolution, incomplete saturation of the bulk with respect to B, etc.scan also be incorporated into the model. This model would serve as a benchmark to test the accuracy of pseudo-homogeneous models. The Cell Model In the cell model, cells are used to account for the interactions among the particles. When two particles are near each other, each particle prevents spreading of the solute dissolving from the other particle. If all particles are of equal size, and if the interactions among them are symmetric in the mean sense, it is possible to view the particles as being enclosed in equal-volume

the interval 0 and Zp does not, in any way, influence its chance of being found in some interval ∆Zp beyond Zp, and (ii) the probability of finding a particle in a short interval ∆Zp varies linearly with ∆Zp. Property (i) is obeyed by the Poisson processes, where the number of events is dependent on the size of the time interval in which they occur, rather than on the location of the time interval on the time axis. In the present problem, the time interval translates to the interval of distance on the cell axis and the number of events corresponds to the number of particles encountered in that interval. Because particles have no preference for a particular location of the interval, property (i) is obeyed in the present case. Property (ii) follows from the general principle that any functional dependence between the probability and ∆Zp can be linearized and this linear approximation becomes increasingly accurate as ∆Zp becomes smaller. This considerably simplifies the analysis, because, now, only one cell must be examined. The present cell model is similar to that presented by Karve and Juvekar11 for estimating the enhancement by fine catalytic particles at the gas/liquid interface. As the first step, volume of the entire liquid is compartmentalized into equally sized cylindrical cells that have a height-to-diameter ratio of unity. The radius of the cell is denoted by Rc. Consider now a stack of cells that have a common axis that is normal to the interface. The interparticle spacing is denoted by d, as shown in Figure 2. We assume that only the first particle contributes to the enhancement of the absorption of A. The particle that has the greatest contribution to the enhancement factor, after the first particle, is the second particle. We expect the contribution due to the second particle to be small, for two reasons. First, it lies beyond the distance Zp + 2Rp from the interface. Hence, it cannot approach the interface as closely as the first particle does. Second, the flux of A, approaching the second particle, is screened by the first particle. We have shown later, through simulations, that even if we neglect the screening effect and consider only the distance effect, the contribution of the second particle is small. We divide a diffusion film that has a thickness δ into equally sized cylindrical cells. Each cylinder has a radius Rc (obtained from eq 21) and a height δ (the film thickness). The first integral corresponds to the situations when the particle is present in the cell, and the second integral corresponds to the absence of the particle in the cell (where the flux is contributed solely by diffusion from the bulk). The correct upper limit of the first integral (and the lower limit of the second) should be Zp ) δ (the particle is completely out of the film). However, we have used the limit corresponding to a situation when the lowermost point on the particle touches the boundary of the film (see Figure 2b). Thus, we have ignored the contribution to enhancement from the particles that are partly in the film and partly in the bulk. This is done to simplify the computational algorithm. This is the result of the basic assumption of the cell model that the curved boundary of the cell, which expresses the interaction among the particles, is a reflecting boundary.
