A f t e r a stint as a postdoctoral a n d research associate at t h e U n i v e r s i t y o f M i n n e s o t a , h e m o v e d to t h e E n v i r o n m e n t a l Protection Agency's (EPA) E n v i r o n m e n t a l R e ­ search L a b o r a t o r y i n C o r v a l l i s , O r e g o n , as an on-site u n i v e r s i t y cooperator. T h e r e h e l e d a small group o f scientists i n t h e i n t e r p r e t a t i o n o f t h e Ε P A ' s extensive lake a n d stream acidification surveys a n d s e r v e d as a t e c h n i c a l c o n t r i b u t o r to Integrated Assessment, t h e N a t i o n a l A c i d P r e c i p ­ itation Assessment Program's report to t h e U . S . C o n g r e s s o n 10 years o f acid-deposition research. H i s 4 0 + publications have dealt w i t h b i o g e o c h e m i c a l processes that c o n t r o l t h e alkalinity o f surface waters, t h e geochemisty o f d i l u t e " s e e p a g e " lakes, s e d i m e n t c h e m i s t r y , t h e i n t e r p r e t a t i o n o f w a t e r - q u a l i t y trends, r e ­ gional analysis o f water quality, m o d e l i n g lake e u t r o p h i c a t i o n , lake manage­ m e n t , reservoir water quality, a n d n o n p o i n t source p o l l u t i o n . H e r e c e n t l y j o i n e d t h e faculty o f t h e D e p a r t m e n t of C i v i l E n g i n e e r i n g at A r i z o n a State University.
