The pyridine used in the present experiments is a milder complexing agent than EDTA but probably plays essentially the same role. At room temperature, complexed Mn2+ ions enter the interlamellar spaces as Cd2+ions are displaced from the host lattice.
Upon heating, pyridine and water are deintercalated and Mn2+ cation enters the intralamellar Cd2+ vacancies. The amount of water present dramatically affects the rate of intercalation. When the amount of water is
