The Executive Committee met on Saturday, March 31, 2001, from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. Morton Hoffman, Program Chair, noted that 1,101 Division-sponsored presentations were being made at the San Diego meeting; this included 700 presentations by students. An extensive one-day program for high school chemistry teachers, chaired by Joe Baron, was held all day Tuesday, April 3, in conjunction with the San Diego meeting. Barbara Pressey Sitzman, recipient of the James Bryant Conant Award in High School Chemistry Teaching, gave her award address on Tuesday afternoon as a part of the High School Program. About 100 teachers attended the high school program. Paul Rillema (Wichita State University) is the new editor of the DivCHED Newsletter; he replaces Jim Schreck. Frank Torre will replace Mort Hoffman as Program Chair for ACS national meetings. In addition, the Division is searching for a Director of the Examinations Institute to replace

Association Report: ACS Division of Chemical Education Dwaine Eubanks, and the Journal of Chemical Education is searching for a Publications Coordinator to replace Richard Schwenz. The Journal of Chemical Education also seeks an editor of the Secondary School section, to replace J. Emory Howell (see p 723 of the June issue for details). Member dues will increase from $15 to $20; dues for student members will change from $8.50 to $10. Glenn Crosby presented a proposal to the Executive Committee to solicit funds to establish a Division Service Award. The Long-Range Planning Committee presented a draft to the Executive Committee regarding ways to further incorporate high school teachers into divisional activities. The draft is under further consideration and Richard Jones, the committee chair, solicits feedback. Copies of the draft report can be obtained from Jones (
[email protected]). Additional details will be reported at the Executive Committee meeting during the Fall 2001 ACS Meeting in Chicago. The Executive Committee discussed the growing attendance at the Biennial Conferences on Chemical Education (BCCE) and the strains that such expansion imposes on the host site. A task force will be established to consider the BCCE infrastructure in relation to the operational logistics of the BCCEs. A significant amount of the surplus from the 2000 BCCE has been turned over to the Division. It has been set aside and will likely establish an endowment for future BCCEs. The Executive Committee commended Seyhan E¯ge and her 2000 BCCE planning committee for this gift and for the outstanding conference that was held at the University of Michigan. The next BCCE will be held at Western Washington University in Bellingham, WA, in 2002; in 2004 BCCE will be hosted by Iowa State University, Ames, IA. Bids are being solicited for the 2006 BCCE. The Web Committee, chaired by Craig Bowen, is soliciting feedback from members of the Executive Committee about a new design for the site. CHED Election 2001 The slate of candidates for the CHED 2001 election appears at the right. Report from the ACS Council CHED members are active in ACS governance. Since the last report, the following individuals have been elected to national ACS positions: Eli Pearce, President-Elect; Joan Shields, Director-at-Large; Ann Nalley, Director, Region V; Ron Archer, Committee on Committees and Committee on Science; Barbara Sawrey, Committee on Committees; Jeannette Brown and Thomas Gilbert; Committee on Nominations and Elections. 862
The Council met on Wednesday, April 4, 2001. Highlights of that meeting include the selection of candidates for ACS President-Elect in 2002: William F. Carroll Jr. (Occidental Chemical Corp., Dallas) and Elsa Reichmanis (Bell Laboratories, Lucent Technologies, Murray Hill, NJ). The Council voted to increase the membership of each ACS Standing Committee from not fewer than twelve and not more than twenty members, and to set 2002 dues to $112. A new edition of the Academic Professional Guidelines was approved. The Meetings and Expositions Committee reported that the inclusion of projection systems in all technical session meeting rooms will continue at least through the Spring 2002 meeting. The Committee on Economic & Professional Affairs reported a Web-based salary comparison system was released in February 2001. ACS Division of Chemical Education 2001 Election of Officers Candidates for the 2001 annual election of Division officers for 2002 appear below. Ballots will be mailed for arrival in mid-July or early August. Ballots must be received by the Treasurer by October 1, 2001. Both ACS and affiliate members of the Division may vote for the offices of Chair-Elect and Member-at-Large; only ACS members may vote for Secretary/Councilor and Councilor/Alternate Councilor, since these are ACS as well as DivCHED offices.
