F. G. DONNAN Professor Donnan of University College, London, is well-known to chemistsgenerally through the as.rociation of his name with membrane equilibria. A p u p i l of van'f Hqf and of Ostwald, his outstanding contribution to science has been the application of the theories of ph,ysical chemistry to the chemistry of colloids and especially to biological processes occurring at cell walls. For the above informal portrait (taken i n the summer of 1912) we are indebted to Professor C. W. Foul4 of The Ohio State University.
