Atlas P o w d e r ' s chemical sales h e l d u p very well, it says, i n spite of i n creased competition in 1954. I t says t h a t during 1954 its chemicals research staff brought t o the commercial stage a line of improved emulsifiers for food processors a n d several n e w surface active agents for t h e petroleum industry. Research is continuing o n other chemicals for petroleum production, and a number of new surfactants w i t h promising uses in t h e detergent field are in various phases of development. Commercial Solvents reports t h a t proportion of sales and earnings from petrochemical products continued t o increase throughout t h e year, reflecting full production from expanded nitrogen a n d methanol production facilities.

H o w ever, t h e final q u a r t e r of 1954 a n d t h e first two months of 1955 show a d e cided u p t u r n . P i t t s b u r g h Coke & Chemical says most of its sales decline occurred in coke a n d p i g iron w h i c h were effected by the sharply curtailed operations of trie steel industry. T o w a r d t h e e n d of trie year, d e m a n d for these products improved markedly.
