Some U. S. corporations with many European and foreign subsidiaries have found it profitable to u s e their foreign laboratories to solve chemical a n d technical problems, since the salary of foreign chemists is lower than that of American chemists. This is particularly the case for fundamental research, where the U. S. dollar will b u y more chemical research abroad than it will here in the U. S. (Dun's Review and Modern Industry, p a g e 6 2 ) . However, just as merchandise made by cheap European labor is kept out of the U. S. by tariff walls, has not the time come also to keep out research done by cheap foreign labor? If American corporations give research problems to European chemists rather than employing U. S. research chemists, t h e d a y may come w h e n there will b e a shortage of brilliant U. S. chemists, if only because they lack experience. To the U.
