FROM HISTORIC DISOVERY
NMR
NMR When Nuclear Magnetic Reso nance signals were first observed about 15 years ago, they indicated only the simple presence of the hydrogen nucleus. Few persons seeing those historic broad-line traces could have guessed the rich body of chemical information that lay hidden within—or that NMR spectrometers would today be in hundreds of important chemical labora tories—at universities and colleges and at private and government research centers. This intense interest resulted when the first discovery was supplemented by a secondnamely that the broad nuclear signal could be split into numerous sharp peaks, some now resolved to 1 /2000th of the line width first seen. NMR spectra have thereby become sensitive indicators of molecular structure and a unique means of providing complex non-destructive quantitative analysis. The key has been development of extremely sensitive and stable instrumentation. Varian Associates has, for over seven years, offered the finest commercially available NMR spectrometers and accessories. Each major advance in the technique has been met — if not introduced —by improvements in Varian equipment. Would you like to know more about the applications of this important technique?
