TESTS Assay (Total alkalinity by nonaqueous titration). Weigh accurately 0.25 g, and dissolve in 100 mL of glacial acetic acid. Add 0.5 mL of crystal violet indicator solution, and titrate with 0.1 N perchloric acid in glacial acetic acid volumetric solution to a green end point. Correct for a blank. Heavy Metals [Part 2: Colorimetry and Turbidimetry; Heavy Metals (as Lead); Procedure for Heavy Metals, Method 1]. Use 1.0 g.
Chloride [Part 2: Colorimetry and Turbidimetry; Chloride]. Use 0.2 g.

Substances Darkened by Sulfuric Acid Dissolve 0.5 g in 5 mL of sulfuric acid. Allow the solution to stand for 15 min. The color of the sample solution should not exceed that of an equal volume of the acid.

Hydrolyzable Substances Boil 10 mL of a 1 in 10 solution of glycine for 1 min, and set aside for 2 h. The solution, when compared to an equal volume of an untreated sample solution, should appear as clear and as mobile.
