Half-a-million pounds of cellulose acetate butyrate for Salesman 312 " W h e t h e r he k n e w it or not, the customer needed a supply of cellulose acetate butyrate," reported one of our Eastern region s a l e s m e n "so I was on the p h o n e again to tell h i m (this was the third time). "I had just received an urgent teletype from our plant which read: AT CURRENT PRODUCTION RATE ASSIGNED WAREHOUSE SPACE WILL BE FULL OF SPECIAL TYPE BUTYRATE ESTER DAY AFTER TOMORROW. PLEASE ADVISE DISPOSITION AND IF WE SHOULD CONTINUE PRODUCTION.

" T h e problem was that in July we had received no orders from this customer for August delivery. Yet, he normally used several hundred thousand pounds per m o n t h of this particular ester. O n the first check I had been advised by their Purchasing Department (my regular contact being on vacation) that they were sure everything was quite in order. "But then three weeks w e n t by, three weeks of grinding out the ester and stacking it against m y insistence that the customer somehow was wrong and would surely need it. " T h e chemical buyer returned; I checked the second time; h e checked w i t h his warehouse people and reported that apparently they had enough, production was normal. More esterification, two weeks more w i t h no orders, and I could see m y n a m e stenciled across 9,862 bags of ester. " W i t h this third call I fully expected some words of advice about attending to my own business, which I was. But patience and a detailed outline to the customer of his normal purchase pattern paid off. For ah actual count inventory revealed that it was dangerously low. "Following a few parting remarks from the chemical buyer about our keep-track-of-his-inventory type service, I notified the plant to start shipments immediately." When it comes to service, our customer's business is our business! And we intend to keep it that way. We'll risk being told to mind our own.
