The long awaited (7 years) translation of the first volume of the three-volume set by Heilbronner and Bock has arrived. Though this treatise introduces only the simplest oneelectron Huckel calculations, its superior presentation makes it mandatory asan introductory text. This book, which received a highly favorable review when the German edition appeared (R. Haffmann, J. Amer. Chem.Soc.. 91,4614 (1969)). has been faithfully translated by Martin and Rackstraw. Few errors were apparent. (One exception was the inversion of a fraction in problem 1.18. p. 26. making the solution impossible!) The translators have gone a step further, however, and added helpful explanations at the end of several af the chapters. Leading references to other works are also listed at the end of each chanter.
