A compact kit supplying all reagents needed for the colorimetric quantitation of the enzyme alpha-hydroxybutyric dehydrogenase (HBD) in serum is now available. The kit contains a reference standard of the HBD enzyme and sufficient quantities of HBD substrate, DPNH reagent, color developer (dinitrophenylhydrazine in hydrochloric acid), and 2N sodium hydroxide for 100 determinations. Hyland Laboratories, Morton Grove, III. 501

High Quality Solvents A new line of solvents, specially purified for use in the determination of pesticide residues by gas-liquid chromatography with the electron capture detector, is available. The solvents are labeled "Pesticidequality" and are certified to contain no interfering substances greater than that equivalent to 10 parts per trillion of a chlorinated pesticide. The following are now available: acetone, acetonitrile, benzene, 2-butanone, butyl alcohol, isobutyl alcohol, carbon tetrachloride, chloroform, cyclohexane, dichloromethane, dimethylformamide, ρ-dioxane, ether, ethyl acetate, ethyl alcohol, heptane, hexane, methanol, 2-methoxyethanol, 2-methylpentane, methyl sulfoxide, petroleum ether, isopropyl alcohol, toluene, and 2,2,4-trimethylpentane. ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY

Pressed pellet powders carefully pre pared for use in solid phase infrared spectroscopy are available. Infrared spectrophotometric analyses are made on all materials prior to packaging. KBr with a refractive index of 1.56 at 0.59 micron is useful in the investigation of materials with refractive indices in the 1.4 to 2.3 range. TIBr with a re fractive index of 2.5 at 0.6 micron is useful in the near infrared region (1.5 to 4.0 microns). It is particularly valuable in the investigation of chalked or degraded pigmented films and plas tics, and other high index materials. Csl with a refractive index of 1.75 at 20 microns is said to offer advantages not previously available in powders for pressed pellets. Csl pellets can be pressed without the aid of intense heat, hence are useful in working with organic samples and other low re fractive index materials.
