Rotation Direction of Magnetic Stirrers and Stirrer/Hot Plates for Bottom-Driven SpinningBand Distillation Columns Robert Rothchlld The City University of New York. John Jay College of Criminal Justice. Toxicology Research and Training Center. Department of Science. 445 West 59th Street. New York. NY 10019 Relatively inexpensive magnetically hottom-driven Teflon spinning-band distillation culumnr hare rrrently lwrome available horn at least two supplirrs tCorning Glaas \Vorks and .4cr Glass. Inr.). The current models have a left-hand helix, and, for proper operation, require clockwise rotation of the spinning-band when viewed from oboue. For labs considering the adoption of these microscale distillation calumns, pmper stirrer rotation direction must be confirmed before placing orders. Unfortunately, current manufacturers' literature on these columns and the magnetic stirrers or hot platelstirrers with which they can be used does not address rotation direction or column helicity. The information in the table has been gathered from suppliers and manufacturers of magnetic stirrers in an effort to aid others in selecting the proper equipment. Although stirrer rotation may be reversed in some cases, such modifications by the user may void the warranties and present potential hazards. Communication with the dealer or manufacturer is strongly encouraged since some items may be available on special order with rotation directionsopposite to those listed. The table notes some cases where units that are normally available with clockwise rotation (appropriate far current Corning or Ace microscale columns) are alternatively available with opposite rotation for possible special applications.
