ican C h e m i c a l Society as an outlet for symposia and collections of data i n special areas of topical interest that c o u l d not be accommodated i n the Society's journals. It provides a m e d i u m for symposia that w o u l d otherwise be fragmented because their papers w o u l d be distributed among several journals or not p u b l i s h e d at a l l . Papers are r e v i e w e d critically according to A C S editorial standards and receive the careful attention and processing characteristic of A C S p u b l i c a t i o n s . maintain the integrity of the symposia on w h i c h they are based; h o w ever, verbatim reproductions of p r e v i o u s l y p u b l i s h e d papers are not accepted. Papers may i n c l u d e reports of research as w e l l as r e v i e w s , because symposia may embrace both types of presentation.

ABOUT T H E EDITOR J . E D W A R D GLASS is a professor of p o l y m e r s

and coatings at N o r t h D a k o t a State U n i v e r sity. H e r e c e i v e d a bachelor of science de gree i n chemistry from L o u i s i a n a State U n i versity i n 1959 and a P h . D . degree from P u r d u e U n i v e r s i t y i n 1964. F r o m 1963 to 1980, he w o r k e d for the U n i o n C a r b i d e C o r poration at its South Charleston Research and D e v e l o p m e n t Center. H i s research interests have i n c l u d e d a l most a l l aspects of water-soluble p o l y m e r s : kinetics a n d synthesis b y free-radical pro cesses, controlled substituent placement i n the derivatization of carbohydrate polymers, solution and interfacial adsorption and viscosity behavior of both p o l y m e r types, and m e a n i n g ful extrapolation of such fundamental data to the performance of watersoluble polymers i n applications formulations. H e has p u b l i s h e d more than 150 technical papers and r e c e i v e d several patents i n these areas of study.
