In Honor of Dr. John Ross Grace Dr. John R. Grace is a Professor in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at the University of British Colombia. Dr. Grace is an outstanding Canadian figure in Chemical Engineering. He is the author of approximately 260 articles and book chapters and coauthor of the leading book Bubbles, Drops and Particles, published in 1978. Dr. Grace’s primary research focuses on fluidized beds and related multiphase systems. Working closely with graduate students, fellow faculty, and researchers, Dr. Grace has investigated a wide range of topics using an approach that combines fundamental concepts with practical applications. In the recent past, his research has focused on transient forces exerted on immersed tubes, heat transfer in the freeboard region of bubbling beds, and heat transfer to the walls of circulating fluidized beds. In the area of high-velocity beds, he has studied tube erosion, hydrodynamics and mixing, effects of the particle size distribution, and reactor modeling. Applications include thermal energy storage, drying of wood wafers, fluidized-bed combustion of various fuels, and a novel process for natural gas steam reforming.

Dr. Grace is member of a group exploring the effects of occupational exposures on workers’ health. In addition to identifying exposure sources, he helped establish a novel coding system, as well as techniques to compare and model the relationship between occupational exposure and disease. Throughout his career, Dr. Grace has received many awards and acknowledgments and is presently the holder of a Canada Research Chair. In this capacity, he is investigating two crucial environmental issues: gas emissions causing acid rain and the overproduction of greenhouse gases. His past and present students and his colleagues are pleased to dedicate this special issue in honor of Dr. Grace’s exceptional contributions to the fields of fluidization and chemical reactor engineering.
