In Memory of Jerome A. Seiner This issue of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Research is dedicated to the memory of Jerome A. Seiner, who died July 21, 1998. Jerry served as Senior Editor of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Research since its inception as a monthly journal in 1987. Prior to that, he served as Editor of
the quarterly journal I&EC Product Research and Development from 1978 until it was merged with the other two quarterlies to form the current monthly journal. The first five papers in this issue are invited contributions from colleagues associated with Jerry in one

way or another and are about topics closely related to Jerry’s own career. Jerry received a degree in Chemical Engineering in 1954 from what is now Carnegie Mellon University. He joined PPG Industries directly after graduation, where he worked until his retirement on June 1, 1998, with the exception of two interruptions. He spent 2 years of service with the Army Chemical Corp. and the 196869 academic year conducting polymer research at Case Western Reserve University. Jerry was an inventor or co-inventor for more than 80 U.S. patents during his distinguished 42-year career at PPG Industries. He was appointed Manager of Resin Products in 1970 and Director of Advanced Coatings Research in 1984. He was named Corporate Fellow and a member of the PPG Collegium, the company’s highest scientific recognition, in 1994. He was involved in the development of numerous commercial products, including gas barrier coatings, fire protective mastics, beverage can spray liners, latex vinyl chloride copolymers for wood primers, and others.
Jerry was involved in numerous professional activities. He was a strong advocate of his alma mater and has served on the industrial advisory board of the graduate program in Colloids, Polymers, and Surfaces (CPS Program) at Carnegie Mellon University since the program began 25 years ago. He was an active member of the American Chemical Society with, of course, his most visible service being almost 20 years as an Editor of two versions of Ind. Eng. Chem. He was a strong supporter of the journal and cultivated effective relationships with many authors and reviewers. He brought a valuable industrial perspective, especially in the area of commercial products, to our editorial team that literally cannot be replaced in today’s environment. We fondly remember his infectious enthusiasm and sorely miss his advice and counsel. Donald R. Paul Editor IE000632U
