INT ~ JOURNAL, S 42, 473 (19651,the following statement is made: "The apparent molal volumes resolve AV into its component parts: that due to the structural changes associated with methanol and that associated with water." Captain Edwin F. Meyer, Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, e d e d to the attention of the authors that the apparent molal volumes do not resolve the volume change on mixing into its component parts. The measurement of volume changes when methanol and water are mixed show that the change varies with the composition of the system. This change can be shown by graphing t ~ parent molal volumes, hot i t would be preferable to use partial molal volumes for this purpose.
