PROCESS KINETICS ?

The 19th Annual Christmas Chemical EngineeringSymposium presented before the ACS Division of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry at Yale University, New Haven, Conn., January 2-3. 1953

This Symposium on Process Kinetics is t h e nineteenth in theseries sponsored annually, without interruption, by t h e ACS Division of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry. Originally conceived as conferences devoted t o reviews and progress reports on unit operations by and for university people, they have won increasing interest and support by engineers working in industrial laboratories. This has resulted in adding t o t h e chemical engineering literature n o t only t h e contributions from university laboratories, which normally would have been published anyway, but also much fine work which might, without t h i s stimulus, have remained in industry files. The practice of announcing t h e topics a t least one year in advance has had a considerable effect in guiding research i n t o fields pointed o u t as growing in importance. Many of t h e topics in t h e present program were dealt w i t h in t h e N i n t h Chemical Engineering Symposium j u s t 10 years ago under t h e t i t l e “Industrial Reaction Rates.” The progress made in t h i s important fleld is evident in t h e papers published here. The topics follow a logical sequence: t h e flow patterns of fluids and solids, diffusion mechanisms, factorial design of chemical reaction experiments, correlation by means of general theories, and applications t o reaction design.
