IT TAKES A LOT MORE THAN MOVING A MOUNTAIN OF PRODUCT TO STAYON TOP Union Carbide has built the world's most extensive distribution system for ethylene oxide and ethylene glycol because we have to deliver a mountain of product every year... over three billion pounds. And, you can't continue to stay on top of the industry unless you know how to keep transportation costs down and efficiency up. Our network starts with a 675mile pipeline that links five of our own ethylene units with most other major ethylene producers. This pipeline gives our ethylene oxide/glycol plants access to 90 percent of the U.S. production and storage capacity of ethylene. By 1980, well have 600 million pounds of storage capacity in place, and that's just for ethylene — the feedstock—to keep our EO/EG plants running. We have more than 375 dedicated tank cars in our ethylene oxide/ethylene glycol distribution network. They're joined by 13 dedicated barges for inland waterway glycol movement and two ocean-going tankers with the ability
to deliver ethylene glycol anywhere in the world. Normally we have hundreds of millions of pounds of bulk storage located at our eight distribution terminals and our five EO/EG plants. Our distributors, in more than 50 cities, maintain millions of pounds of additional inventory for quick delivery to their customers. And, to make sure we keep track of your orders, we have an on-line computer that follows every tank car shipment, stores its history and estimates the expected arrival time. In the highly competitive ethylene oxide and ethylene glycol business, you need a lot more than just a good distribution system to be the leader. You also need the biggest production capacity and a big commitment to research. We have all three, because that's the only way we know to stay on top.
