NEW BOOKS a reference to the location of the original infrared spectra as published in the literature or in standard catalogs of spectra. 2) Names used for compounds are those provided by the authors; these have been rearranged to provide an index name according to the inversion naming system used by Chemical Abstracts and punched into IBM cards. 3) Arrangement is by numerical order of the numbers of atoms in the molecular formulas. ASTM plans to issue annual supplements to this index.

This volume represents a thorough revision of the earlier edition. A new feature is the chapter on principles of gas liquid chromatography which is based on original work in which 13 laboratories participated. The chapter on sampling has been revised; it served as a basis for British Standard and International Standard procedures. ASTM Standards on Iron Castings A-3. viii -\- 232 pages. American Society for Testing and Materials, 1916 Race St., Philadelphia 3, Pa. 1962. $4. To ASTM members, $3.20. This second edition, the first was published in 1958, contains 40 specifications and test methods covering pig iron, gray iron castings, cast iron pipe, modular (ductile) iron castings, malleable iron castings, welding electrodes, and rods. Ten entirely new standards are included in this edition, while 12 standards have been revised.

Basic Study of Vacuum-Fusion Analysis of Refractory Metals for Gases. M. W. Mallett and others.

Battelle Memorial Institute for the U. S. Army, Watertown Arsenal. Jfi pages. Order AD 283 548. SI. Various techniques for the determination of oxygen in the refractorv

metals, columbium, tantalum, molybdenum, and tungsten, by the vacuumfusion method were evaluated. These principal findings are reported: The platinum-bath technique gave excellent results for oxygen in tantalum; analysis of molybdenum by the ironbath technique at 1650° C. and a 20minute extraction gave good reproducibility at the 3 p.p.m. oxygen level; oxygen analysis of tungsten with an iron bath at 1650° C. for 20 to 30 minutes and a maximum tungsten concentration of 30% appeared satisfactory for 2-g. samples. The Identification of Polyols in Synthetic Coating Resins by Programmed Temperature Gas Chromatography, Part 2. G. G. Es-

posito, Aberdeen Proving Ground, U. S. Army. 11 pages. Order PB 181 354. 50 cents. Xeopentyl glycol, 1,4-butanediol, dipropylene glycol, and triethylene glycol, are identified by calculating their relative retention times, as compared to the second butylamine reagent peak and then comparing these values with those obtained from knowns. Oriented Single Crystals of Aluminum for X-Ray Analysis. J. M.

Dhosi and others. Watertown Arsenal Laboratories, the U. S. Army. 10 pages. June 1962. Order PB 181 362. 50 cents. A simple gradient heating apparatus was developed in this research and used to grow oriented single crystals of highpurity aluminum suitable for x-ray diffraction analvsis. Critical reviews of the following books will appear in future issues. Spectroscopy.
