January 2010 News & Announcements News from JCE Take the JCE Survey! As mentioned last month, we at the Journal of Chemical Education are evaluating not just how the Journal is made but also the sort of content we provide. A crucial part of our evaluation is the feedback we get from you, our readers. How can you tell us what's on your mind? By taking our survey! The survey collects data on who uses JCE, how you use it, and which offerings are the most and the least important to you. We will not share your personal information with anyone. Please take a few minutes to complete the survey. With your help, JCE will continue to offer the chemical education community a superb resource for the teaching and learning of chemistry. You can find the link to our survey on JCE's Web site at http://www.jce.divched.org/survey2009/. Email Addresses Needed Do not get lost in the transition to ACS! Starting with the January 2010 issue, ACS Publications will be managing all JCE subscriptions including online access to the Journal. ACS Pubs will be contacting JCE subscribers with new online access codes by email. If you do not have a current email address on file with JCE you will miss this important information. Do not miss out: as soon as possible, please send your email address and subscriber number (the 5-digit code near the top of your mailing label) to
[email protected], with the subject line “email address”. We promise never to sell or circulate this private information. Thanks! Chemists Celebrate Earth Day 2010 The February 2010 issue of JCE features articles that educators can use to help incorporate Earth Day-related topics, experiments, and activities into their curriculum. The theme this year for Chemists Celebrate Earth Day is “Plants: The Green Machines”. The February issue will arrive in January, so you will have lots of time to prepare for Earth Day on April 22, 2010. Scheduled Journal content related to this theme includes a JCE Classroom Activity as well as topically selected News from Online, Reports from Other Journals, and Book and Media Reviews. Peer-reviewed articles with environmental themes will also be included. Award Address Alexander Henry Johnstone was honored with the 2009 ACS Award for Achievement in Research for the Teaching and Learning of Chemistry. The award, sponsored by Pearson Education, recognizes chemical education researchers whose body of work has increased the field's understanding of pedagogy and thereby fostered improvements in chemistry teaching and learning. Johnstone's award address, “You Can't Get There from Here”, is printed in this issue of the Journal.

Johnstone taught chemistry at the University of Glasgow, Scotland, where he held the Chair of Science Education. He founded the Centre for Science Education, where he supervised the work of more than 80 researchers in the field of science education. He also established the University of Glasgow's Teaching and Learning Service, which helps teachers in all disciplines improve their teaching skills and introduce innovations to the classroom. The winner of the 2010 award is Michael R. Abraham of the University of Oklahoma. Abraham will be honored on March 23, 2010, at the 239th ACS National Meeting in San Francisco, California. Award Deadlines Knowles Science Teaching Fellowships The Knowles Science Teaching Foundation (KSTF) is currently accepting applications for their 2010 teaching fellowships.
