P R O P Y L E N E GLYCOL p r e s e r v e s fresh look of poultry in crust-freezing technique "By crust-freezing our birds with propylene glycol, we can assure the preservation of natural color, texture, and freshness of taste," says Mr. Victor Pringle, general manager of Rockingham Poultry Co-operative, Inc., Broadway, Virginia. In this improved method of liquid freezing, turkeys or chickens traveling on a conveyor are subjected to a steady shower of precooled propyl 12

The solution, of course, never touches the flesh of the birds, which are enclosed in polyethylene bags, but its applica tion quickly freezes a solid crust from XA" to % " thick . . . FREEZING POINT OF AQUEOUS SOLUTIONS OF PROPYLENE GLYCOL
Propylene Glycol, Weight Per Cent
Propylene glycol is an excellent heat transfer medium with a wide temperature range. It can be used alone or in aqueous solution. It is used extensively as a coolant in brewery and dairy cooling systems because of its low toxicity. Propylene glycol is also used where a heat transfer medium capable of being heated above 212° F. is required. In addition, propylene glycol is a remarkably versatile polyol with excellent hygroscopic, solvent, emulsifying, preservative and nontoxic properties. The U.S.P. grade is preferred in food, tobacco, and cosmetic applications, while the Industrial grade is valuable in polyester resins, hydraulic fluids, deicers, plasticizers and cellophane. break. It has a wide temperature range and excellent heat transfer properties. Propylene glycol/ water ratio is easily controlled for specific conditions. The solution may be used repeatedly, and is noncorrosive to the equipment. The jet activated propylene glycol quick-freezing method is about twice as fast as ordinary liquid freezing and ten times faster than blast freezing.
